Time Duration Calculator
Add one or more start and end times and the calculator totals the hours between them. It handles overnight spans, takes off breaks, and shows the answer in hours and minutes and in decimal hours.

How to find the duration between two times
Subtract the start time from the end time. When the end's earlier than the start, the span's crossed midnight, so you add 24 hours to the end first. 22:00 to 06:00 is 06:00 + 24:00 - 22:00 = 8 hours.
Working out a split shift with a break
07:00 to 11:00 = 4:00
15:00 to 19:30 = 4:30
4:00 + 4:30 = 8:30, minus a 30 minute break = 8:00
Add each part of the day as its own line, then put any unpaid break in the break box. You'll see every line's duration and the total written out underneath.
Minutes to decimal hours
Divide by 60: 8:30 is 8.5 hours and 7:45 is 7.75. Timesheets and invoices usually want decimals, so the calculator gives you both. If you're tracking a whole week with overtime, the time card calculator'll do the weekly math too.
Common mistakes
It's easy to subtract an overnight span the wrong way. 22:00 to 06:00 isn't minus 16 hours; it's 8 hours, because you've crossed into the next day. You don't need to do anything special here, since the calculator spots it.
People also forget the break when they've got a split shift. If you worked 7 to 11 and 3 to 7:30, the gap in the middle isn't work time, and it shouldn't be counted. That's why each part goes on its own line.
And don't mix decimals with clock times. 8.30 and 8:30 aren't the same thing; one's eight and three tenths of an hour, the other's eight and a half. You'll see both forms in the results so there's no doubt.
If a line shows a dash, it's because one of its times is empty. Fill it in or remove the line, and you're done.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find the duration between two times?
Subtract the start from the end. If the end's earlier, the period crosses midnight, so add 24 hours first. 10:15 to 14:45 is 4 hours 30 minutes.
How do I total a split shift?
Work out each part separately and add them. 7:00 to 11:00 is 4 hours and 15:00 to 19:30 is 4:30, so the day's 8:30.
Can I take off a break?
Yes. Type the unpaid break in minutes and it's taken off the total.
How long is it from 9:45 to 2:30?
It's 4 hours and 45 minutes, whether you mean 9:45 AM to 2:30 PM or 9:45 PM to 2:30 AM. From 9:45 to 12:00 is 2:15, and 12:00 to 2:30 is 2:30, so that's 4:45.
What's the longest span it'll handle?
Each line can run up to 24 hours. For spans of several days, add one line per day.
