Time Card Calculator
Enter when you clocked in and out each day, with your lunch break. You'll get daily and weekly hours, the overtime past 40 hours, and your gross pay if you add an hourly rate. Every day shows its own math, so you can check it against your pay stub.

How do I calculate hours worked?
Take the clock-out time, subtract the clock-in time, then take off the unpaid break. The calculator does that for every day and writes the sum out beside it, so you don't have to trust a number you can't see.
Totaling a shift, step by step
In 8:00, out 17:00 = 9:00 on the clock
Lunch 12:00 to 12:30 = 0:30
9:00 - 0:30 = 8:30 worked (8.5 hours)
Overtime past 40 hours
The federal rule's in 29 U.S.C. section 207: a covered employee who works more than 40 hours in a workweek gets at least one and a half times the regular rate for the extra hours. It's a weekly test, not a daily one, so a 10-hour Monday doesn't create overtime on its own if the week stays at 40. Some states add daily rules; this calculator doesn't assume them.
With $20 an hour and 44 hours in the week, you'd get 40 x $20 = $800 regular pay and 4 x $30 = $120 overtime, so $920 before taxes. For other multipliers, like double time, use the overtime calculator.
Common mistakes
Don't count a paid break as unpaid. Short rest breaks are usually paid, and it's only the unpaid meal break you'd take off. If you aren't sure which yours are, your employer's handbook or pay stub should say.
Don't round each day before adding them up. If you round 8:20 down to 8 hours five days in a row, you've lost an hour and 40 minutes. It's better to add the real times and round once, if you've got to round at all.
And don't assume a long day means overtime. Under the federal rule it's the week that counts, so a 10-hour Monday won't earn overtime by itself if you're still at 40 hours by Friday. Some states differ, so it's worth checking yours.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate hours worked?
Subtract the clock-in time from the clock-out time, then take off any unpaid breaks. In at 8:00, lunch from 12:00 to 12:30 and out at 5:00 is 9 hours minus 30 minutes, so you've worked 8:30.
How is weekly overtime worked out?
Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, hours over 40 in a workweek are paid at least one and a half times the regular rate. The calculator adds up the week and puts anything past 40 hours into overtime.
Does a day over 8 hours count as overtime?
Not under federal law, which only looks at the week. Some states have daily overtime rules, so check your state's labor department if you think yours does.
How do I handle an overnight shift?
Just type the times as they happened. If the clock-out's earlier than the clock-in, the calculator knows the shift crossed midnight.
Why use decimal hours on a time card?
Payroll multiplies hours by a rate, and that's easier with 8.5 than with 8:30. The calculator shows both.
